Lawrence ferlinghetti
Lawrence Ferlinghetti was born in Bronxville, New York, on March 24, 1919. His father died six months before he was born, and his mother was committed to an asylum shortly after his birth. He was then moved to France to be raised by an aunt, and after five years of that, he was brought back to America and placed in an orphanage until his aunt could find work. Once she did find work as a governess for a family, he moved into the family's home with his aunt. He became an Eagle Scout and attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in 1941. Upon graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy, and after his discharge, Ferlinghetti took advantage of the G.I. Bill to continue his education. He received his master’s degree from Columbia University in 1948, and completed his doctoral degree at the University of Paris in 1951. Ferlinghetti currently writes for the San Francisco Chronicle and operates the City Lights bookstore. He is 94 years old.
